When you’re trying to accomplish the unknown, it’s hard. It’s hard because you’ve never done it before.
And you’re in the dark without a flashlight or a torch. So you can’t always see where you’re going, or whether there’s any light at the end of the tunnel.
On top of that, you have to muster the confidence and courage to keep believing in yourself. Consistently.
You have to believe you have what it takes to succeed. And you have to do it while roaming in the dark with minimal light to lead you to your destination.
I hate that.
But at the same time – it’s exciting, thrilling, and gives you something to look forward to. But if your self confidence is wavering, consider these 5 guaranteed ways to keep believing in yourself.
It works well for me and you can benefit from it, too.
1. Seek out examples
Unless you’re trying to create a spaceship that can travel beyond Jupiter, there are examples of people who’ve done what you’re trying to accomplish.
All you have to do is open your eyes to the world and pay attention.
When I first started an eCommerce business, there were (and are) 1000’s of examples out there already.
All I had to do was read a couple of books on it to learn from their stories and examples. And take that knowledge and apply it to my own life.
When I started studying SEO, I found plenty more examples proving that it’s possible.
When I started blogging, there were examples out there that proved you can build a successful blog. So I already knew what was and is possible before I even started.
And even better than that, when I had poor self esteem, there were people who already proved it’s possible to overcome it.
I simply had to look for the proof to prove it’s possible, and then use that inspiration to make it happen. And that strengthened and took my self belief to a whole new level.
So let’s suppose you want to make a living on Etsy. Here’s what the process looks like:
- Search for and find the best designers and crafters on Etsy.
- Read their biography.
- Find out when they started.
- Find out how long it took on average to reach a certain level of success.
- If you have more questions, reach out and message them.
- Buy/read their books if they’ve published any.
- Look to their social media profiles.
- Check out their websites, interviews, videos, etc.
By doing this you’ll have all the examples you need. Not to mention all the proof you’ll need to convince yourself it’s possible.
And you can use the Etsy example above and apply it to any area of your life where you lack self belief.
Once you believe it’s possible, you’ll take action. And by taking action, you’ll start to believe in yourself. And then you’ll believe you’re capable of making it a reality.
Especially when you start getting some results, no matter how massive or tiny those results turn out to be.
2. Record and acknowledge your achievements
These days recording your achievements (or anything) is easy. Because we now have computers, smartphones, memory cards, USB Sticks, Google Drive, and other ways to save our data.
For me all my achievements and successes are recorded in my Evernote or Journal. Or they’re recorded through my writing.
And no matter how you record your achievements, the important thing is to acknowledge your achievements.
I’ve been blogging over 6+ years.
That’s an achievement in itself. And beyond that, I’ve been featured in the top 100 personal development blogs list.
I’ve also been featured in many other personal development blog awards, round-up posts and more.
I acknowledge that. I’m grateful for it. And I don’t take any of it for granted.
Just by acknowledging it, I give myself more reasons to keep believing in myself. And that adds to my courage and confidence. Which then adds to my drive and commitment.
It’s a nice domino effect. And it all starts when you acknowledge your accomplishments and successes.
How big your successes are is irrelevant. Because it all adds up and it all makes a difference.
It all contributes to a bigger cause and your end goals.
3. Start A Mastermind Group
A mastermind group is where a group of people meet up regularly to help each other achieve their goals.
It doesn’t matter if we’re talking about health, business, career, relationships, money or confidence.
A mastermind group can be about anything you want.
The benefits of starting a mastermind group:
- You’re surrounded by people who BELIEVE in you.
- You’re around people who want you to succeed.
- The people you surround yourself will push you to do better.
All three of these reasons will add to your self belief. You’ll believe in yourself more, because the people around you believe in you.
Believing in yourself is one thing, but having others believe in you really does make a difference.
It adds to your confidence and gives you even more courage than you thought possible.
And that helps.
So how do you start a mastermind group?
Find 2-5 people you like or know, meet up every week or month online or offline. Maybe for 1 hour.
Set an agenda, meaning – a topic or a focus. For me that focus is business.
And then give someone the spotlight each week to discuss their challenges. While you and everybody else chips in to help solve those problems.
4. Use your imagination
“Logic will take you from point A to B. Imagination will take you everywhere.” – Albert Einstein.
Kids blow my mind with their imagination and excitement towards life.
If you were to learn from anybody about using your imagination to boost your confidence, kids are the best examples.
To the average adult, a kid with an imagination is “cute” “unrealistic” and nothing more. But actually, it’s your imagination that fuels your ambition, drive and commitment.
And nothing great has ever been created or accomplished without the use of imagination.
- Imagination fuels your self belief.
- Imagination gives you courage.
- Imagination allows you to see beyond where you are.
- Imagination gives you the power to see what;’s possible.
Your arms aren’t the only muscles in your body that can be exercised.
If you want to strengthen your imagination, then exercise it as often as possible. And that alone will boost your self confidence and raise your self belief.
5. Ask positive “What If” questions
If there’s one thing that cripples your self belief, it’s the questions you ask. And the words you repeat, day in and day out.
Repeating words like these everyday will crush your confidence:
- I’ll never succeed.
- I’m not good enough.
- I’m worthless.
- I’m pathetic.
- I have no special talent.
- I have nothing to offer.
- I’ll never amount to anything.
Words do have power. And how you use them and phrase them has an impact on your self belief.
Instead, it’s better to ask questions like this:
- What If I succeed?
- What If I end up achieving more than I thought possible? What would that do for me?
- What If I am more talented than I give myself credit for? What would life look like If I believed that?
- What If I believed in myself? What difference would that make? How much better would I feel?
These are examples. The truth is – what you say and how you say it has an impact on your self belief.
And how you ask questions is the difference between believing in yourself and putting yourself down.
