Is Bragging Really A Bad Thing?

Nobody Gives A Shit About People Who Lack Opinions

It’s not bragging if you can back it up. – Muhammad Ali

Bragging is universal, and more people than not despise people who brag a lot. Or at least that’s how it seems on the surface.

People will say – “he’s such a show off! What a prick”, or – “I hate people who brag about it”.

But as surprising as it might sound, Bragging is a sign of self confidence.

Some of you just read that sentence and probably thought – “bragging is a sign of self confidence? Yeah right”.

But I’m afraid it’s the damn truth! Bragging IS a sign of self confidence.

The only time it’s NOT a sign of self confidence, is when the person bragging can’t back it up. When a person can’t back it up, they’re expressing insecurity, not confidence.

But as Muhammad Ali said – It’s not bragging if you can back it up.

So back to the question.

Is bragging really a bad thing?

Nobody Gives A Shit About People Who Lack Opinions

As long as you can back it up, no it’s not. If you’ve done it, why not toot your own horn?

I’ll explain why bragging is actually a GOOD thing.

1. Bragging gets you noticed

Be the one to stand out in the crowd. ― Joel Osteen

Smart people brag. Confident people brag. Businesses brag. Honest people brag. And the benefit of bragging is it gets you noticed.

Lets use Steve Jobs as an example.

Between 2000 – 2004, Steve Jobs said –

We made the buttons on the screen look so good you’ll want to lick them.

He was talking about the buttons on the screen of the MAC OS X computers.

Isn’t what he said a form of bragging? I want you to read it again.

We made the buttons on the screen look so good you’ll want to lick them.

He bragged, he boasted, and of course it drew attention to the computer its self.

It got him attention, it sparked attention, and it got him and his company noticed. It got people talking…

Why did it get people talking? Because he wasn’t just able to back it up, but he was 100% confident when he said it.

Confidence is S-E-X-Y. It’s that simple.

Rappers do the same thing.

You hear it all the time from various rap artists.

  • Some of them talk about how much money they’ve got.
  • Some of them talk about how many girls love them.
  • Some rappers talk about how lucky they are.
  • Some rappers talk about how many clothes they’ve got.
  • Or how many albums and records they’ve sold.

And it works well for them as it gets them noticed. Because they’re confident, they can back it up, it promotes their brand and generates a lot of attention.

Almost ALL big businesses do this as well through advertising, branding, and marketing.

If you don’t promote yourself, who will? And if what you’re saying is true, why not brag about it, toot your own horn and promote it to the world?

If nobody knows about it, they never will.

2. Bragging is a form of honesty

If you done it, it ain’t bragging. – Walt Whitman

  • If you’re good looking, why not express that?
  • If you’ve built multiple successful businesses, why not mention that once or twice?
  • If you got straight A’S in maths, English and science, why not mention it?
  • If your blog gets millions of visitors a month and hundreds of comments, why not mention it?
  • If you’re rich, why not express that?
  • If you’re a great salesmen, why not mention that in your next job interview?

You see, If you have a problem with people who do these types of things, it means you’re insecure and jealous.

A confident person has no need to feel insecure, jealous, or hatred towards someone who speaks the truth.

If it’s the truth, why not say it? Muhammad Ali said it’s not bragging if you can back it up. And here’s what I say.

It ain’t bragging if it’s true.

If you’ve got something good to say about yourself, and you know it’s the truth, say it without hesitation.

Nobody can know or believe you’re great if you don’t say it. Just like nobody can know you’ve accomplished something if you don’t tell them.

And whether you like it or not, you HAVE to promote yourself to get to where you want to be. You have to sell yourself, and do it with confidence.

3. Bragging is a form of self belief

“It ain’t bragging if you can back it up.” – Muhammad Ali

To even toot your own horn shows you believe in yourself, otherwise you wouldn’t do it. So bragging can’t be that bad, can it?

If you’ve accomplished something many others have NOT accomplished, and you’re proud of it, why not shout it out loud?

If you’ve created something remarkable, why not tell people about it and spread the word? That’s what entrepreneurs, designers, and business owners do on KickStarter.

Does that make them braggers and boasters? And If so, does that make them bad? Or vain?

Does that make them arrogant, small minded, and disrespectful? Of course not, that would be ridiculous to even think that.

Bragging is a form of self belief. You’ve got to believe in yourself. If you don’t toot your own horn, don’t expect anyone else to do it for you. 😉

4. Bragging helps you stand out

In order to be irreplaceable one must always be different. – Coco Chanel

How many people do you know of who are willing to shout about their accomplishments? Not many, right? And that’s the problem. But then again it’s also the solution.

  • If you’re not afraid of being confident and speaking your truth, you’re bound to stand out.
  • If you’re not afraid of sharing your accomplishments on Facebook or your website, you’re bound to stand out.
  • If you’re not afraid of telling everybody about something great you’ve done, you’re bound to stand out.

You know why? Because few people are willing to do that. It’s easier to be silent, not be recognized or criticized than to be noticed.

Take advantage of that opportunity. Make it yours, and you’re bound to stand out, be noticed, be respected, and even admired for it.

There’s nothing wrong with a little bragging

Don’t knock the bragger. Especially If they can back it up and what they’re saying is true.

Bragging is confidence, and you need confidence to express yourself out loud without fear of judgment, or criticism.

If you’ve been looking at bragging through negative eyes, hopefully this post will WAKE YOU UP.

And If people try to knock your confidence or the fact that you’re so called “bragging”, respond with this.

It’s not bragging if you can back it up. – Muhammad Ali

Here are 4 takeaways from this post:

  1. Bragging gets you noticed.
  2. Bragging is a form of self confidence.
  3. Bragging is a form of self belief.
  4. Bragging helps you stand out.
