Nobody wants to slash their wrist because life is hard.
That only happens when you’re stressed and you don’t know what to do.
Here’s what I do to fight back.
1. Listen to vocal music
Vocal meaning Hip Hop, classical, etc.
Music is a LIFE saver for me. It’s one of those things I don’t know what I’d do without it.
In fact, as I type this I’m listening to music.
The other day I was in one of those moods. Caught in the moment. Feeling a little sluggish with my motivation.
The moment after I threw on some headphones and blasted some music, that all changed.
My feet were moving, my body was rocking, and my head was bopping as If I was out in a night club or a rave.
Music has also been proven to raise your dopamine (the chemical that makes you happier).
I’d recommend you get in the habit of it.
2. Listening to “instrumental” music
In the past few years I’ve fallen in love with instrumental music. It’s like the love of my life I never thought I’d ever meet.
Except there’s no vocals, no voices, no emotions… Just beautiful music with relaxing tones, and a nice blend of instruments to ease my emotions.
Or hard-hitting instrumentals that get me “pumped” up and energetic.
That’s all it takes to kick my motivation up the ass and get me back in the swing of things.
3. Hilarious YouTube videos
Everybody’s definition of hilarious is different. What’s funny to me may not be funny to you.
But watching hilarious YouTube videos is an effective way of kicking my ass back into gear.
You know, the stupid one’s that make you feel like you’re about to die. Because you’re laughing your ass off.
The fact that humor and laughing keeps your spirits up is the reason it works so well.
And I wouldn’t miss it if you’re serious about staying motivated.
4. Self reflection
I’m introverted so self-reflection is important for me.
It not only helps me gather my thoughts, be creative, problem solve and think into the future, but it helps me kick my motivation into gear.
Especially when I’m feeling low on motivation for whatever reason. Or when I feel like punching life in the face.
When reflecting, looking at how far you’ve come, where you’re going, what you’ve achieved and what’s possible is a good way to refuel your drive.
5. Being useful
When I feel deflated and my motivation is wounded, being useful makes all the difference.
Meaning — helping other people where I’m able to help. Giving and providing value to them.
Supporting them. Answering questions they need answers to, or solving a problem I’ve already solved myself.
Online or offline.
It could even be helping someone out in the neighborhood, like one time I helped a woman move some heavy furniture.
She was grateful. I felt good. It was a win-win.
Giving to others in some way, shape or form brings my motivation right back up. And that sharpens my focus like never before.
And as an added bonus, it makes me feel good about myself, too.
6. Watching anime
It’s no secret that I LOVE anime. I grew up watching Dragon Ball Z and Pokemon.
Anime always teaches me something new every time I watch it. It’s special to me.
And in a weird way, that’s all it takes to refresh my “motivation” again.
I also love cartoons in general. Remember Tom and Jerry?
How about Scooby Doo, Courage The Cowardly Dog, or even Dexter’s Laboratory?
Cartoons mostly work for a good “laugh”. Laughing is good for the soul.
7. Writing down goals
Writing down your goals and repeating them out loud works wonders.
It’s not only good for clarification, but it’s good for keeping your goals on top of mind.
Goals that are worth striving for should excite you, so writing down your goals is a must for refueling your motivational tank.
8. Creative expression
Creativity? I can’t get enough of it.
Anything creative, whether I’m consuming it or creating it, the thought of it gets me going.
It’s like sex. But thankfully not as messy or risky.
Take this post I’m writing for example.
It’s a nice way to get my thoughts out, my emotions out, my stress, ideas, problems, and everything related.
I enjoy it and it’s that enjoyment and passion that keeps my spirits high and my motivation in-check.
What do you want out of life?
Maybe you want a big house so you can have a gym, swimming pool, or even your own music studio.
Maybe it’s wealth, so you can give it all the way to people who need it.
As for me, I wanna make a difference through self expression, business and more while I’m alive
To do that I need plenty of money and plenty of persistence.
So I use my imagination and picture how I want it. Then I get to work.
If you can’t use your imagination and you don’t know what you want, you’ll struggle with self motivation.
10. Writing down ideas
Writing down ideas goes well with writing out goals or using your imagination.
What Ideas do I write to get motivated?
- Ideas about the future.
- Ideas about business.
- Ideas on how I can improve.
- Ideas to help me write better.
- Ideas on how I can make life more interesting.
And the list goes on forever.
Writing down ideas, no matter what it is, is a good way to take your mind off the BS and focus on what it is you actually want.
That way you’re focused on the right things, and motivation becomes a thing of the past.
When my motivation is low on batteries, if worst comes to worst, I’ll procrastinate.
And after I’ve procrastinated a little, my motivation is back on track.
How is that even possible, and why would I say that?
Because it works for me. Here’s why.
When you’re low on motivation, fighting it sometimes is more effort than it’s worth. Depending on how bad it is, of course.
And if it’s not worth the fight, then procrastinate. Watch that TV program for an hour. Do nothing in particular for 20 minutes or so.
Go through your social media. Go through your email. Or whatever it is you’d consider procrastination.
Then before you know it your motivation will magically pop back into gear. And your spirits will be higher than an astronaut.
It’s the thought of “WTF am I doing with myself” that gets you motivated again.
Call it guilt tripping if you want. It’s the same thing, and it works for me.
But if you do this, ONLY use it as a last resort.
