No one’s ever achieved financial fitness with a January resolution that’s abandoned by February. – Suze Orman

I’ve stopped creating new year resolutions for about 3 – 4 years now. Why? Because they’re a waste of my time! And no, that’s not the only reason either.

New year resolutions are for dreamers, wishers, and people who don’t have a PLAN.

I know this because I myself used to be that person foolish enough to make resolutions without having a plan of action.

That’s what most people do, and I ain’t interested in being most people. Neither should you.

Today is the 15th of December 2014, and on January 1st 2015 I can guarantee you the masses will be screaming “THIS YEAR, MY RESOLUTION IS (fill in the blank)”.

And those same people aren’t gonna achieve a damn goal in 2015.

By time February comes around, they’ll already be exhausted and be close to giving up on their “new year” goal. A month after they claimed “this year will be different”.

As I said earlier, I was once one of these people so I know this from experience, not just from observation. Suze Orman put it perfectly, and I’m going to repeat the quote again to give you a reality check.

“No one’s ever achieved financial fitness with a January resolution that’s abandoned by February.”

Most people will say things like – my new year resolution is to:

  • Lose a certain amount of weight
  • Earn a certain amount of money.
  • Get rid of bad habits.
  • Start a website.
  • Stop drinking excessively.
  • Quit smoking.
  • Quit their job.
  • Start a business.
  • Get a 6 pack or get fit in time for summer.

And this never works because they’re only stating it, wishing it, thinking it and dreaming it. They’re not DOING it, they’re not taking action, and most importantly, there’s no ACTION PLAN.

People don’t bother to write it down, figure out HOW they’re going to achieve their resolutions, and they don’t make the effort necessary. Or at least they don’t realize how much effort it’s actually gonna take.

I’ve left that old version of me behind and I don’t want that version of you hanging around. And the solution to solving that problem is this.

Forget About New Year Resolutions And Focus On The Present

To focus on the present is to focus on today. You should be focusing on what you can do today to push you closer to your goals tomorrow, the next week, month and so on.

What you do today determines what will happen tomorrow. And what you do this week will determine what will happen the week after that.

“We become what we repeatedly do.” ― Sean Covey

If you expect to achieve any goal you have, you’ve got to change your daily habits. And If you insist on calling your goals new year resolutions, the same rule applies.

You won’t lose 10 pounds of weight If you’re operating on bad daily habits. That would only set you up for failure.

You’ve got to change your mindset and your habits in the present to have a positive influence on your future.

“We can’t solve problems by using the same kind of thinking we used when we created them.” – Albert Einstein

And that Albert Einstein quote is the reason most people are wasting their time with resolutions that are destined to fail.

Instead of thinking about what your new year resolutions are gonna be, you need to be thinking about what you need to start doing from today to make it happen.

You need to start writing down a plan of action, a how to guide and how you plan on doing it. Don’t wait until 2015 to start doing that, why not start working on it today?

Waiting won’t solve the problem, and screaming “THIS YEAR WILL BE DIFFERENT” on Twitter won’t solve the problem. Taking action today and everyday will solve your problem. Because as the saying goes –

Tomorrow never comes.

So to break down this entire post, here’s what I recommend you do.

  1. Forget about new year resolutions and focus on the present.
  2. Get started today.
  3. Create a plan of action.
  4. Rid of your bad daily habits.
  5. Improve your mindset.
  6. Focus on what you can do today and everyday to push you closer to your goal.
  7. Take daily action.

I know many of you may disagree with me, and some people follow new year resolutions and that’s cool. But If it hasn’t been working for you, maybe it’s time to use a method that will work for you.

Take it easy and stay blessed!
