Depressing Habits You Need To Break To Be Happy

On a scale of 1 – 10, how happy are you? Somewhere in the middle? A little lower than 5? Or a little higher than 5?

And If you’re not as happy as you could be, why do you think that is?

Would It surprise you If I said your habits are the cause of your unhappiness? 

Looking outside yourself to create more happiness doesn’t work. It starts on the inside.

And a big portion of any unhappiness you experience is because of your habits. 

Here are 10 depressing habits you need to break to be happy.


1. Comparing yourself to others

Comparison is a thug that robs your joy. But it’s even more than that – Comparison makes you a thug who beats down somebody – or your soul. – Ann Voskamp

You know why comparing yourself is such a problem? Because it’s not possible to be the person you’re comparing yourself to.

And that’s not the only reason. By comparing your situation to others, you’re justifying your own circumstances. Circumstances you don’t even like.

What good will that do you? If you expect to be happy within yourself, start comparing yourself TO yourself.

Then commit to Improving yourself and your happiness on a daily basis. Comparing yourself to others will only keep you on the hamster wheel.



2. Letting people walk all over you

A little harsh, right? Maybe, but it’s the damn truth. Sugar coating just ain’t my style.

I don’t care how much you love the person who you allow to walk all over you.

I don’t care how long you’ve known the person who’s wiping their feet all over you.

I don’t care how long you’ve been best friends or how long they’ve been in your life.

But what I do care about is the fact you’re allowing it to happen and It’s killing your happiness.

Being happy is more important than being unhappy and letting people take advantage of you.

I know you’re smart enough to know that! So it’s time to man up (or woman up), and start standing up for yourself :).

It might be a little uncomfortable and fear-inducing at first, but fuck it! It’s for your own good.


3. Putting yourself down

Putting yourself down everyday is a habit you don’t need to be hanging around with.

It’s time to cut the rope and let this habit fall to it’s death. Because If you keep up this habit not only will you be unhappy, but you’ll…

  1. Ruin potential relationships.
  2. Make it hard for others to compliment you genuinely.
  3. Make it hard for others to commend you.
  4. You’ll reject the compliments people give you.
  5. You could ruin your chances progressing in your career (low confidence).
  6. You won’t take opportunities when they come to you.
  7. You’ll hesitate to do things you’re afraid of.
  8. You’ll push others away from you.
  9. You’ll only make life more difficult for yourself.

All it takes is simple actions to make the changes.

Instead of saying to yourself – “I’m so terrible at (fill in the blank)”, say “If I keep practicing, I’ll become great at (fill in the blank)”.

And start surrounding yourself with people who support you, uplift you, change you and help you grow for the better.

If you’re associating with people who put themselves down a lot, it’s no wonder you’re doing it yourself.

I’m not saying it’ll be easy, far from it. The easy things are never rewarding, it’s the hard things that make all the difference.


4. Running away from your problems

You can never truly run away from your problems, you know that as well as I do!

It doesn’t matter how fast you try to run away from your problems, because their 100 times faster.

You could get in your car, start the engine, put your foot on the pedal, put it in 5th gear, and drive at full speed.

You could be driving at 100 – 200 MPH, but guess what? You still won’t be able to outrun your problems!

Not even Sonic the Hedgehog can outrun problems, even though he can move at light speeds ;).


The solution?

Face them, fix them, solve them, and delete them from your life.

Whatever major problem you’ve been running away from, focus on the solutions rather than the problem.

So for example – If your problem is creating more time through out the day, focus on taking more action instead of how much time you have.

The more action you take in any given day, the more you’re going to get done. It’s that simple.

Approach all your problems this way and you’ll be able to rid them from your life. And when new problems creep up, repeat the process.


5. Holding your tongue

When you hold your tongue you end up being and feeling miserable. Why? Because If you don’t speak your mind, you’ll be taken advantage of.

Kids, adults, young adults and so on are bullied for this same reason.

Bullies love it when you don’t speak up or speak out as they operate under the radar.

And not only that. If you hold your tongue long enough you’ll drive yourself mad, because of the fact you’re holding back too much.

Now, there are times when speaking your mind and keeping it real isn’t necessary. Like responding to a naysayer, etc.

But don’t be so hesitant to express yourself that you end up stressing yourself out and being unhappy because of it.


6. Giving up on your goals

Your goals mean everything to you.

Your goals are important to you and it’s important that you achieve them. That’s why you created them, right?

You created them because achieving your goals will make a huge difference and have a massive impact on your life.

Whether that’s health, wealth, fitness, relationships, friendships, giving back to charity, business or something else.

Your goal is your goal, and too many of us tend to give up on our goals.

And that’s the quickest way to unhappiness.

Why? Because our goals are life changing, and by giving up we’re accepting our lives for what they are.

You don’t set goals because you’re satisfied with where you’re already at.

No, you set goals because you’re not satisfied with where you are.

You’re not satisfied with what you’ve achieved and accomplished so far.

And hitting those goals will only make you that much happier.

Notice how people who are jealous, envious and full of hate are unhappy?

Notice how trolls and naysayers are always trying to bring people down who are making something of themselves?

I’ll tell you why, because those haters have given up on their goals and their dreams. So they’re furious with the world.

And as a result, they believe nobody else should be able to have success, all because they’ve given up on it themselves.

You don’t want or need to be THAT person. Persevere, be consistent, surround yourself with supporters and keep going.

It’s all worth it in the end. Nothing beats being truly happy and fulfilled.


7. Associating with negative people

I hate to say it but there are more negative people in the world than positive people.

And If that’s not true, then I’ll tell you what is.

Negativity spreads 10 times faster than positivity, and negativity gets promoted more than positivity as well.

You need to get rid of the negative people in your life, or associate with them a lot less than you do.

You might not realize it when you’re associating with them, but negative people are so draining.

They’ll drain the happiness right out of you, and you’ll end up adopting negative habits If you’re around it too long.

If you associate with people who bitch, moan, complain, gossip, ill talk others, It’s time to step back!

You know it ain’t worth it.

As sad as it is to say, it’s likely some of your family and friends are negative in this way.

But what has to be done has to be done.

Politely tell them If they continue to be negative, you refuse to be around it 24/7.


8. Degrading yourself

I don’t have to go into too much detail for you to understand what I mean by this.

You’ve seen it before, I’ve seen it before.

Degrading yourself to gain something isn’t the solution to happiness, I can tell you that!

Have you ever met a person who degrades themselves to gain something who looks happy? Or IS happy?

I’m sure you know the term – “selling your soul to the devil”, would you be happy doing that?

If someone offered you 10 billion pounds in exchange for walking the streets naked, having your naked body plastered all over the internet, newspapers, and magazines, would you?

10 Billion pounds is nice, but I can guarantee your happiness will suffer in the long run.

When you go against your morals, values and beliefs, you’re bound to suffer.


9. Being a spectator too often

Life is not a spectator sport. If you’re going to spend your whole life in the grandstand just watching what goes on, in my opinion you’re wasting your life. – Jackie Robinson

Though Jackie Robinson is spot in with what she said, there’s another reason you don’t want to be spectating too often.

The moment you become a spectator is the moment you become critical of others.

The moment you become a spectator is the moment you become critical of the things around you.

You see it at football games, sports events, concerts, and even online.

The idiots who are trolling and commenting on a ton of YouTube videos, why are they so critical? Because they’re spectating.

“She’s so ugly, I don’t understand why she’s so famous”. “Your music is shit, what an idiot”.

Ever notice comments like those on YouTube? They’re SPECTATING.

In other words, they’re wasting their time putting too much focus on other people.

When you become a spectator too often, you’re unproductive.

And when you’re unproductive, guess what? Your life SUFFERS.

And before you know it, your life isn’t going anywhere and you don’t have anything to do.

You end up being too busy watching others instead of focusing on yourself.

That’s NOT the key to happiness, that’s the key to UNHAPPINESS. Which side of the fence do you want to be on?

Be the entertainer, not the spectator. The entertainer is productive, the spectator is the opposite.


10. Living below your potential

When I say living below your potential, I mean not striving to reach your potential.

Is that the case with you?

Are you bothered enough to reach your true potential? Do you believe it’s just too much hard work? 

And when I say hard work I don’t mean doing a 12 hour shift at a job. That’s only a part of hard work.

I mean working hard to better yourself on a daily basis.

The easier it is, the less rewarding it will be.

Jim Rohn has said something similar –

If you’re living below your potential you’re somewhat of a loser.

I agree. There’s no happiness in being less than you can be.

But there’s plenty of happiness in being and doing what you’re capable of.

There’s plenty of happiness in reaching your true potential.

Stop living below your potential and accepting it for what it is.

If you know there’s a lot more to your potential, do whatever it takes to reach it.

You’ll be much happier that way.

As I said earlier, there’s no happiness in being less than you can be.
